This style of wooden print block is hand carved from a piece of dense wood such as Acacia or Rosewood. The vast majority of this type of block printing is now being done with metal blocks and the old wooden ones are rapidly being destroyed or sold. This type of block is found throughout south and central Asia, this style is is more typical of the northern parts of Pakistan and Afghanistan. Though they could as easily come from Sindh where there is a large industry making cotton Ajraks. These were either used with ink for direct printing or wax for batik. They have been coated to make them water resistant, we have found that brushing them with mineral spirits will remove some of the darkness.

They make great display pieces, and can be creatively used for a variety of crafts, printing of course but we have seen them used wonderfully in ceramics applications as well.
