3 Beautiful Antique Silver Pendants
$115.00

This is a set of three stunning antique silver pendants from northern Pakistan (at the time they were made it would have been the northwest frontier of India.) These are really lovely work, the leafy design is fantastic and the patina they've acquired over the years is great, the have a soft feel to them. Two have traces of sting left on them, given the bale configuration I would guess that they were once a part of a head dress of some sort.

Each one is 1-5/8" wide by 1-7/8" tall - they have a bit more weight to them than you would expect for their size

Amazing Rabari Choli
$165.00

Brilliant Vaghadi Rabari choli from the Kutch of Gujarat. The Vaghadi now inhabit the eastern side of Kutch after migrating from Sindh roughly 500 years ago, the their dress tend to be more covered giving the influence of Islamic dress in Sindh. They are known for geometric and anthropomorphic embroidery rendered quite finely, highlighted by shaped mirror (shisha) work, these cholis are significantly more rare and heavily worked than their Banjara counterparts. These were worn for festivals and ceremonies, not as everyday wear, hence their good condition. Exceptional appeal to the ethnographic textile collector, but also wearable for dance - typically with a bit of alteration - these should be considered small if you are thinking in "standard" sizes!

Antique Swat Valley Koran / Book Stand
$135.00

A beautiful example of the renowned wood work from Swat Valley, northern Pakistan. The intricate carved designs date back centuries and include many pre-Islamic motifs including many Buddhist related designs. The small stands were made from a single piece of wood that was hand cut from each end then carved to allow the wood to split open and fold downwards to create the stand. Over the decades most of these have inevitably split and have been repaired. The care and skill put into these are a mark of reverence for the regional tradition of woodwork as well as the reverence for the purpose of displaying the Koran in the home or public location. See Johannes Kalter's "Arts and Crafts of the Swat Valley, pages 60 and 152 for similar examples from the Linden-Museum Collection.

Beautiful Antique Koran Stand from Swat Valley
$145.00

A beautiful example of the renowned wood work from Swat Valley, northern Pakistan. The intricate carved designs date back centuries and include many pre-Islamic motifs including many Buddhist related designs. The small stands were made from a single piece of wood that was hand cut from each end then carved to allow the wood to split open and fold downwards to create the stand. Over the decades most of these have inevitably split and have been repaired. The care and skill put into these are a mark of reverence for the regional tradition of woodwork as well as the reverence for the purpose of displaying the Koran in the home or public location. See Johannes Kalter's "Arts and Crafts of the Swat Valley, page 60 and 152 for similar examples from the Linden-Museum Collection.

This style of wooden print block is hand carved from a piece of dense wood such as Acacia or Rosewood. The vast majority of this type of block printing is now being done with metal blocks and the old wooden ones are rapidly being destroyed or sold. This type of block is found throughout south and central Asia, this style is is more typical of the northern parts of Pakistan and Afghanistan. Though they could as easily come from Sindh where there is a large industry making cotton Ajraks. These were either used with Ink for direct printing or wax for batik. They have been coated to make them water resistant, we have found that brushing them with mineral spirits will remove some of the darkness.

They make great display pieces, and can be creatively used for a variety of crafts, printing of course but we have seen them used wonderfully in ceramics applications as well.

Highly Unusual Old Tribal Embroidery
$95.00

Quite and unusual old embroidery, we've not seen anything quite like this before. It seems to be from Rajasthan or Gujarat, it bears similarity to Rabari work, but none of the designs or color work quite match up. It could also be Afghani in origin, but again the designs don't quite match up with what is regularly seen. The format is also quite odd, it seemingly has been sewn together to form a bag or a cuff, and the pointed part of the design was sewn under (you can see a difference in coloring.) Interestingly there is a fair amount more design work that has been sketched on to the fabric that was never completed, though the textile obviously has been used. The backing cloth is of a fairly heavy weight cotton, and the embroidery thread seems to be a mix of cotton and silk.

SIZE: 13" x 19"

Koran Stand From Swat Valley - Antique

See Johannes Kalter's "Arts and Crafts of the Swat Valley, page 60 and 152 for similar example from the Linden-Museum Collection.
